Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musically inclined family on August 9th, 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. as well as a cousin of the singing sensation Dionne Warwick. The mother of Whitney Houston and her daughter began to sing professionally together in the church of New Hope Baptist of Newark when Whitney was only fifteen years old. They sang the backing vocals for Chaka Khans 1978 track Im Every Woman. Her mother, Jermaine and Lou Rawls were among those who she sang with. Also, she was modeling for Seventeen magazine in the year 1981. The year 1981 saw her begin working as a singer in the New York funk group Material. The band's excellent vocals with this group that caught interest of recording label such as Arista. Whitney Houston was her debut album. Whitney Houston was released in 1985, and was the most-seller album by a debut artist. From the album, she released several hit singles like Saving the Day, All My Love for You How Do You Know You're a Good Person? and The Greater Love of All. This helped her achieve seven US Top Ones consecutively. The singer beat the Beatles. The album was released in 1987 and sold 25 million copies worldwide. The Whitney album followed in 1987 and the singles How Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to build on the success of her debut album. It was, however it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard that solidified her standing as one of the most well-known artists. The film and her part in it was not appreciated, but the soundtrack as well as her version to Dolly's I Will Always Love You charted for several months at the top of the charts. In all, she sold over 44 million singles and albums all over the world. The daughter of her mother Bobbi was born in the month of March of 1993, the year after she wed Bobby Brown. Dana Bash (also known as Dana Ruth Schwartz) is a CNN anchorwoman and reporter for the political section of CNN.
